Financial Support

Install safety elements in your secondary suite and get reimbursed for it, with the maximum eligibility of $10,000 per home. It doesn’t cover the whole cost of construction of a secondary suite but covers essential safety elements like hardwired smoke, egress windows, carbon monoxide alarms, and protected exits.

Safety

The program prioritizes safety. The incentive covers necessary safety elements and ensures that your suite abides by all the necessary codes. For instance – a maximum reimbursement of $1500 for installing egress windows, $1000 for carbon monoxide alarms and hardwired smoke, $4000 for a smoke-tight barrier, and $1000 for protected exiting.

Energy Efficiency

Additional funding is provided for accessibility and energy-efficient upgrades. Homeowners can receive up to an additional $1250 for ENERGY STAR-certified egress windows and equipment and split heat/separate air equipment and up to $5,000 for accessible spaces designed to assist those with common mobility issues.

Qualifying for the Program

As a homeowner, you need to have an active building permit for your secondary suite. Don’t have it? Apply for it right away at apply.calgary.ca.

• Take an e-learning course, as it is a mandatory requirement to qualify for the incentive program. It covers all the essential safety elements when it comes to constructing a safe secondary suite.
• As you have received your building permit and completed the e-learning course, it is time to apply for the incentive program. Remember, applications are limited to one per person, and you must own the property throughout the process.
